Internship Experiences Help B-State Exchange Student Pursue Lofty Goal

Bluefield State University exchange student Selina Poljak has just begun the second of two prestigious internship opportunities to pursue her goal of becoming an International Court Judge or ambassador.  She is one of five participants in this year’s Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) program to participate in the U.S. Congressional Internship Program.

On March 1, the Moers, Germany, the pre-law major, began an internship at the Mercer County Courthouse to learn about the American court system operates. She will work with Jackie Barton and Law Clerk Mike French in the office of Mercer County Circuit Court Judge Derek Swope during the next three-plus months.

“Because of my internship in Senator Manchin’s office, I became more knowledgeable about American politics and the political systems,” Ms. Poljak noted.  “I will increase my understanding of American jurisprudence through the Mercer County Court internship (an opportunity made possible by West Virginia Supreme Court Administrator Joseph Armstrong).

Dr. Sudhakar Jamkhandi, Director of the BSU Office of International Initiatives, expressed appreciation for the ‘home stay hosts’ who have supported CBYX students through the years.  “These hosts are the mainstay of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program,” he said.
