MBB Goes 1-1 in Florida

Bluefield State University men’s basketball took down Atlantis University 97-81 on Sunday and fell to Nova Southeastern 122-104 on Monday.

Atlantis University (W 97-81)

Malik Tidwell led all scorers with 23 points followed by Jordan Hinds with 18 and Malik Lacewell with 13. Lacewell led the Big Blue in rebounds with eight followed by Landry Palata with six. Hirotaka Ohashi led the Big Blue with four steals and four assists.

The Big Blue got on the board in the first six seconds of play off of a three from Kaine McColley. Atlantis took their first lead of the night after a Big Blue turnover. The Big Blue battled back to even the score at 34 followed by a two from Tidwell. A trip to the line for Atlantis puts them ahead by one with four minutes remaining, but the Big Blue answered with a three from McColley to take the two-point lead into the half.

The Big Blue offense came out of the half to outscore Atlantis 10-1 in the first three minutes of the half. The Big Blue built up a lead of 14 at the nine-minute mark after a midrange jumper from Khamaury McMillan. Atlantis would pull within eight with three minutes left, but the Big Blue would outscore Atlantis 7-2 in the final minutes to come away with the 97-81 victory.

Nova Southeastern (L 122-104)

Despite hitting a season high of 20 threes, the Big Blue fell to Nova Southeastern 122-104.

Malik Tidwell led the scoring for the Big Blue with 24 points followed by Malik Lacewell with 18, Kaine McColley with 16 and Hirotake Ohashi with 14. Ohashi led the Big Blue in rebounds with six.

The Sharks opened play with eight unanswered points before the Big Blue would get on the board off of a two from Palata and a three from Ohashi to pull within three. The Sharks would build up a lead of 25 at the five-minute mark, but the Big Blue answered with seven to put within 18. A jumper from Ohashi cut the deficit to 16, but a dunk from the Sharks took them into the half with the 18-point advantage over the Big Blue.

The Big Blue pulled within nine midway through the second half, but the Sharks would produce 12 unanswered points to take the 21 point advantage over the Big Blue. A layup from Tidwell put the Big Blue within 16, but could not overcome the deficit set by the Sharks.
