Our tire collection is wrapping up for the year!

This year we collected 3397 tires in total on site. We collected another 4,500 off site (in Summers County) making our grand total for the entire 2 years of collecting tires, 13,512!!

In early 2020, Mayor Jack Scott and the City Council saw a need for a tire collection. The Historic Landmarks Commission AmeriCorps Member from Preservation Alliance of West Virginia Candice Helms, sought assistance from the REAP program through the WV Department of Environmental Protection. They held a yearly tire collection in May of that year generating 3,500 tires. With this being such an enormous turn out, the council sought funding to pay for labor for a monthly collection that effortlessly continued into 2022.

In October 2022, the Summers Co Solid Waste Authority purchased the lot the collection was being held and was happy to continue the collection along with their recycling program. So now the Tire Collection is back in the hands of our SWA! We are excited to have them on board for our County and they are better than ever. If you have any questions regarding recycling, please contact them here on Facebook on their page Summers Co Solid Waste Authority.

We are thankful for all the partners it took to make this collection happen. We could not have done this without Safe And Sound Security Systems, Inc. owner, Tom Conway letting us use his lot. Last but not least, we are extremely thankful to the tire slingers that came out on the last Saturday of the month. This wasn’t ever an easy job, but we knew it was benefited our gorgeous community!
