WBB Remains Undefeated

Bluefield State University women's basketball took down previously 3-0 Edinboro University of Pennsylvania 76-67 on Saturday at Ned E. Shott Gymnasium.

Aerihna Afoa led all scorers with 20 points and seven rebounds. Rori Cox added 17 points and five rebounds followed by Katrina Davis with 14 points and Azariah Binford with 11. Dani Janutolo led in rebounds with 10.

Both teams struggled early offensively, but Edinboro struck first four minutes into play. Edinboro built a lead of five with one minute left in the first quarter, but a quick bucket from Cox followed by two foul shots put the Big Blue within one. The Big Blue took their first lead of the night with 14 second left in the first after a trip to the line from Afoa to go into the second quarter ahead 13-12.

After trading buckets to open the second quarter, the Big Blue went on a 9-0 scoring run with three minutes to go. Two free throws from Essence Cowan put the Big Blue ahead by 10 with under a minute left in the first half. Edinboro closed out the half with two points, to cut the Big Blue lead to eight going into the half.

After Edinboro cut the lead to four, a corner three from Davis put the Big Blue up by seven. Edinboro pulled within two with 48 second left in the third but the Big Blue answered with two from Binford to go into the final quarter with the four-point advantage.

The Big Blue opened the fourth with a three from Afoa and a driving layup from Cox to go up by nine. After a bucket from Edinboro, Cox completed the three-point play to put the Big Blue up ten. Edinboro would pull within six with three minutes remaining but the Big Blue would outscore Edinboro 11-8 in the final minutes to come away with the 76-67 victory.
