Wintery activities at Blackwater Falls State Park, January 27 – 29, 2023 wind down the month of January. You’re invited to join in the fun and activities while visiting for the day or staying at the park. There is no cost to attend and activities begin or inside the nature center unless indicated.
FRIDAY, January 27, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
10:30 a.m.Bust n’ Boom TalkJoin the seasonal naturalist, Kenny, for a little history talk about the local area. About 45 minutes. YPP
1:00 p.m.Creature Feature-Long Tailed WeaselJoin the seasonal naturalist, Kenny to listen about today’s featured creature that makes it special. The long tailed weasel! About 30 minutes. YPP
SATURDAY, January 28, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
10:00 a.m.Winter HikeJoin the seasonal naturalist, Kenny, for an out and back walk to Pase Point Overlook. Trail is rugged with roots, rocks and uneven terrain. About 2 hours., 2 miles Sturdy shoes recommended. We may opt to change trail hike to another trail if winter safety becomes a concern. YPP
10:00 a.m.Who Dung It?Join park naturalist, Paulita,, as we discuss the differences between predator and prey skulls, the purpose of animal pelts, tidbits to animal track and scat. The creation of slimewill be part of this program. About 1 hour.YPP
1:00 p.m.Snakes of West VirginiaJoin the park naturalist to hear about snakes that live in the mountain state. A live snake will be highlighted during the presentation. About 1 hour. YPP
2:30 p.m.Nature MythsCan a shadow indicate when winter is over? Can the woolly bear coloration predict the winter season? Join the seasonal naturalist, Kenny, to help bust a few myths about animals. About 45 minutes. YPP
