Late Rally Not Enough for Women’s Basketball Against Fairmont State

Bluefield State University fell to Fairmont State University 81-71 in a road contest on Monday at Joe Retton Arena.

Aerihna Afoa led all scorers with 22 points followed by Dani Janutolo with 14 and Azariah Binford with 11. Janutolo led the Big Blue with nine rebounds on the night.

The Falcons jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six points of the night. The Big Blue scored the last five points in the opening quarter to pull within three going into the second. After the Falcons opened the second with a layup, the Big Blue answered with a three from Afoa and a putback layup from Rori Cox to tie the game at 14. The Falcons would go on to have a 15-point scoring run to take the 17-point lead. Big Blue Essence Cowan would score the final points of the second quarter to cut the Falcons lead to 15 going into the half.

A three from the Falcons would give them the 24-point lead midway through the half. A three from Afoa with 30 seconds left in the third would cut the lead to 14. A trip to the line for the Falcons added two, but Afoa would hit another three with five seconds in the third to go into the final quarter with a 12-point deficit. The Falcons would have their largest lead of the night at 26 with 5:09 left in play. In the final four minutes, the Big Blue would outscore the Falcons 18-4, but ran out of time to complete the comeback effort, falling 81-71.
