The Concord University softball team lost two games to West Virginia Wesleyan, 11-0 and 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at the CU Softball Field.
Game 1: West Virginia Wesleyan 11 – Concord 0
West Virginia Wesleyan (20-7, 7-1 MEC) broke open the game with a six-run third inning.
Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Bauer (2-5) was able to get CU (10-19, 1-7 MEC) out of a tight spot in the first inning. After back-to-back doubles to start the game, Bauer got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the deficit 1-0.
However, the Mountain Lions were held in check by Wesleyan starter Kendall Stoffel as she gave up just two hits and walked three.
Freshman catcher/outfielder Morgan Gleason collected both Concord hits as she had a single and a double.
Bauer pitched 2.2 innings as she allowed seven runs while striking out three.
Game 2: West Virginia Wesleyan 2 – Concord 0
Sophomore pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts (5-10) was stellar in the circle, but the Bobcats manufactured enough offense to win the nightcap.
Roberts and WVWC's Abby O'Shields matched zeros early on as Wesleyan was able to scratch across a run in the third inning after a leadoff double.
Roberts was unphased by the game's first run as she retired the next 13 batters she faced until a one-out double by the Bobcats in the top of the seventh. The extra-base hit was followed by a single to double the WVWC advantage.
Concord had a chance to take an early lead as Gleason, freshman catcher Lorelai Ellerby and senior outfielder/catcher Jolie Privetted combined for three straight singles with two outs in the second. But, O'Shields was able to escape to keep the inning scoreless.
A walk by Ellerby in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate, but again Wesleyan held off CU for the win.
Roberts needed just 77 pitches to go seven innings. She gave up two runs on five hits while recording one strikeout.
After a two-hit first game, Gleason added a 1-for-3 showing in game two. Ellerby was on base twice with a hit and a walk.
The Mountain Lions return to the road for Wednesday's doubleheader against Glenville State, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
